Workshop sheds

A home office shed, a commute of thirty steps.

What brought you here today?

Taller walls, daylight from the transom row, a window over the desk and a door to the garden. A 10x12 holds a desk, a chair and shelving with room to turn around; a 10x16 adds a second desk or a storage end.

Urban Sheds builders build the shell: the frame, the pressure-treated floor, the roof, LP SmartSide or cedar siding, the doors and the windows. Most builders will insulate and finish the interior on a custom quote; ask at the site visit and it goes on the estimate as its own line item.

A permit is more likely for an office than for a storage shed in many towns, and power needs an electrician; the guides below cover both. Your builder supplies the drawings and specs the application needs.

The sizes that suit it, priced by your builder.

The base build, in your builder’s own prices. Anything you add for this use, a window over the desk, a second door, insulation, the finish, goes on the estimate as its own line item.

Every starting price is the same plain build: LP SmartSide T1-11 siding, painted, a double wood door, on concrete blocks. Standard access, no windows. Everything else is its own line item.

Framed like a house.

Every workshop shed is framed on 16-inch centers with 2x6 rafters and a pressure-treated floor, and carries a 30-year structural warranty, transferable once to the next owner of your home.

Questions people ask us.

Storage shed or workshop shed?

Storage sheds are the smaller sizes, 6x8 to 10x10, at standard wall height: extra storage in a small space, for the mower, the bikes, the bins and the patio set. Workshop sheds are the larger sizes, 10x12 to 12x20, on taller walls: room for big items like a riding mower, or room to be inside at a bench with a project. The taller wall is what makes a 4-foot loft above and a row of transom windows up high work so well. Both are framed the same way, with the same siding and the same 30-year structural warranty, transferable once to the next owner. The difference is size and wall height. If the list is mostly yard gear and bins, it is a storage shed; if a riding mower, a bench, or you are going in, it is a workshop.

Who actually builds it?

Your licensed and certified Urban Sheds builder, the same one who quoted it, with his crew on the bigger builds. He is on site, he is your one point of contact, and his is the name on your warranty, quote to walkthrough. That is what Builder Direct means.

What does the deposit do?

The deposit puts your build on your builder's calendar. He sets the amount, usually 25% of the price, and it comes off your final invoice. It is refunded in full if canceled before the build day. It does not lock the design: you can change the shed with your builder any time before the build and even during it, and each change goes on the estimate as its own line item.

What's the warranty?

Three warranties. Your builder covers his workmanship for the first year and comes back to fix anything that is not right. Urban Sheds covers the structure for 30 years as long as the shed gets about an hour of upkeep a year (we publish the checklist), and that warranty transfers once to the next owner of your home if the form is filed within 60 days of the sale. LP covers the SmartSide siding for 50 years. If your craftsman ever leaves the network, Urban Sheds connects you with another certified craftsman. For a claim, your builder answers within five business days; if you cannot reach him in ten, warranty@urban-sheds.com assigns another certified craftsman within five.
